Victory and defeat and frustration

withdrawing and repentance

then once more pride

the wheel of life

pride

conquest

Victory defeat frustration

remorse repentance

resolution

pride

More people at an earlier age see the conqueror in themselves

then see the way out in another process

the real defeat of ego in which we have no part

The dissolution of ego in reality as it was in the beginning

as it was before we were separate and insular

the process we call destiny

in which we are the material to be dissolved

We eat

We procreate

We die

We can see the process and recognize suffering as the defeat of

ego by the process of destiny

Painting is not about ideas or personal emotion

When I was painting in New York I was not so clear about that

Now I’m very clear that the object is freedom

not political freedom, which is to echo

not freedom from social mores

freedom from mastery and slavery

freedom from what’s dragging you down

freedom from right and wrong

In Genesis Eve at the apple of knowledge

of good an evil

When you give up the idea of right and wrong

you don’t get anything

what you do is get rid of everything

freedom from ideas and responsibility

If you live by inspiration then you do what comes to you

you can’t live the moral life, you have to obey destiny

you can’t live the inspired life and live the conventions

Moments of awareness of perfection and of inspiration are alike

except that inspirations are often directives to action

Many people think that if they are attuned to fate, all their

inspirations will lead them toward what they want and need.

But inspiration is really just the guide to the next thing

and may be what we call success or failure.

The bad paintings have to be painted

and to the artist these are more valuable than those paintings

later brought before the public.

A work of art is successful when there is a hint of perfection

present —

at the slightest hint…the work is alive.

At times, the mind separates from the body. Abstract art is a testament, generally, to the artist’s spirit trying to join the two. In the modern world, the separation of mind and body is fairly standard: we go about our lives affected more often than not by the present state of cultural anxiety provoked by the necessary engagement with the multiple channels of life, real and virtual, that we all exist in. The challenge is trying to protect ourselves from feeling, for to feel would be to complicate what should be clear. Thus disguised, we go about our daily lives in a fractured state: trying not to feel or think, when living a fully realized life requires both. Julie Mehretu’s drawings expose her voice and vision and are a visual representation of her soul—and her desire for the world she lives in and the world she imagines in her work, for the mind and body, to transcend and become one.

Robert Irwin. My heart jumped for joy when he talked about the sentient being vs. the cognitive self. And even more when he walked over to shake my hand after his visiting artist lecture. He reminds me of my grandfather in some ways. When I’m in my 80s I hope I have a least as much light in my eyes as he does.

Julia Haft Candell: Artist Statement

Through my work I am echoing the characteristics of a complex system. Seemingly disparate events align to form a whole that is not predictable from the characteristics of each part. Each element of the system is unique, yet needs the others in order to function, as small changes in a part can drastically alter the integrity of the entire structure. By creating a vocabulary comprised of cells that are repetitively constructed, added, subtracted and rearranged, I can speak of the phenomenal interconnectedness of all things.

Using small components to build larger forms allows me more freedom to continually invent, reassess and make endless decisions about how the work takes shape. The sculpture is a physical record of its making, and a reflection of its own history. Breaking is an essential part of this process. Often I will break apart pieces to reconfigure them, creating collages using three- dimensional parts. Once a piece is composed I will put time into mending and drawing on the surface of the piece, reclaiming and giving value to what is broken or distressed. Ultimately the goal is to form a composition that most effectively speaks to the ambiguity of perception and the complexity of being.
